LGA WA Delivers Clear Views at Hands Oval Stadium with Capral Framing Systems

Located in Bunbury, Western Australia, Hands Oval Stadium is a landmark sporting venue and home to the South Bunbury Football Club and the Southwest Football League. Over the years, it has hosted Grand Finals, WAFL matches, state cricket, and pre-season AFL and A-League fixtures. A 2024 redevelopment transformed the stadium into a modern, high-performance facility, including a new grandstand, change rooms, function spaces, and media and coaches’ boxes. Fabricated by long-term Capral partner LGA WA, Capral’s window and framing systems were incorporated throughout, enhancing the stadium’s performance, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.

Jamie Brooks, Director at LGA WA, explains: “The design focused on flush-glazed systems to maximise sightlines and functionality. Capral’s AGS Commercial 619 Flushline (150 mm) was used extensively for its clean, modern appearance and structural strength.

Large panels of glass in the coaches’ and media boxes provide unobstructed views of the oval, while Capral’s AGS 35 Series Awning Sashes allowed natural ventilation, with Amplimesh security screens fitted to operable sections. Transoms, sills, and heads were carefully aligned with precast concrete panels through coordinated shop drawings and site surveys, and strip drains at ground-level doors ensured proper drainage and accessibility.” Between the media rooms and coaches’ boxes, internal windows required a higher acoustic performance with an RW value of 50. Custom double-glazed units combined with AGS Commercial 450 Narrowline Wide Pocket (101.6 mm) provided a high-performance solution that met these requirements.

The project also presented technical challenges. Stairwell windows reached 8 m in height, requiring mullion splicing and secondary bracket supports. Windows were set at a 5- degree outward lean to minimise reflections and maintain clear sightlines. Large spanning glass panels were installed with no mullions or butt joints, providing unobstructed views. Due to their size and tilt, a Zone Glass lifter and on-site crane were used for safe installation, and zero-threshold sump sills were implemented under hinged doors to maintain accessibility standards.

These challenges were successfully addressed through LGA WA’s precise fabrication. Their precise manufacturing and installation ensured that the AGS 619 Flushline, 35 Awning Sash, and 450 Narrowline Wide Pocket frames met the specifications required for the stadium’s performance, sightlines, and acoustic requirements. Careful coordination between LGA WA, the design team, and on-site installers allowed complex glazing elements, including the stairwell windows and high-acoustic internal frames, to be safely and accurately installed. Their craftsmanship ensured that the high-quality Capral products performed as intended, contributing to the stadium’s striking aesthetic and functional success.

The redevelopment of Hands Oval Stadium highlights how strong collaboration and expertise can transform a sporting venue into a modern, functional, and visually striking facility. The combined efforts of LGA WA, Cameron Chisolm & Nicol, Perkins Builders, and Capral Aluminium have delivered a stadium that will serve the Bunbury community and the Southwest region for decades to come.
